The Pratichi (India) Trust Research Team – under the expert guidance of Professor Amartya Sen – undertook the first research project of the organisation, a study on the delivery of primary education in West Bengal. The first phase of the study was conducted in 18 villages in the Birbhum, Medinipur and Purulia districts of West Bengal. Eighteen primary schools and 17 Shishu Shiksha Kendras (SSKs) were examined in these three districts. The second phase of work in a further 20 schools and the same number of SSKs in 20 villages located in the three districts of Barddhaman, Murshidabad and Darjeeling largely corroborated the findings of the first phase of the study.
